Until Lee Vause introduced herself to the Academy of Quilting, I had not heard of Zentangle so this was a whole new area of quilting for me. Of course, making tangle designs using free-motion stitching really grabbed my interest. As I worked with Lee to get her classes installed (this was now a good many years ago), I knew this was something I would want to try at some point. The thought was put on hold for a long while.
Recently, I was reminded of this idea of zentangle when thinking about making another animal block. I was looking at, in particular, the tortoise block I had appliqued and wondered if this was a suitable design to use for zentangle. I thought it would be the perfect shape.
With a little bit of help from Lee, who suggested some designs for me to use, I soon began stitching and realized I couldn't stop until it was completed!

I have to say, I had a lot of fun! In fact, I feel I'm ready to move on to even bigger projects, although I know some of the other animal blocks will work just as well as the tortoise. Here are a few that spark my interest.
Which one should I try next? ......this week, I have all the animal blocks on sale so this would be the perfect opportunity for you to try one yourself. Check them all out here: Animal Blocks
I should mention that all the tangle designs I used in the Tortoise block can be learned in Lee's classes. If you are unsure about how to do them, then I can highly recommend Lee's classes. As a certified teacher in Zentangle, I know you will be learning from one of the best, I was! You can find out more about Lee and her classes here: Lee Vause
About A Zentangle Journey: As a Certified Zentangle Teacher (CZT) Lee Vause will give you lots of support and direction in this “A Zentangle Journey - Part One” workshop. This class will include the origins of Zentangle in its pen and paper-based form to include a little of the history leading to drawing on tiles and onward. Then use your own creations of Zentangle inspired artworks to transform them with free-motion quilting onto fabric with thread. The class can be followed by a more advanced class, "A Zentangle Journey part 2" or taken alone. Read more...
