May triumphs for Ruth's crafts for quilting, knitting, spinning, crochet, and embroidery

Crafting Goals for May

Tags: crochet, embroidery, inspiration, knitting, quilting, spinning, toy making

It certainly has been a busy time attempting to get all my crafting goals completed during May. With traveling at the beginning and end of the month it was difficult but I have mostly kept up with the challenge! (see my blog post Crafting Goals 2025)

Let's see what I managed....

For quilting: A new flower block every month

Achieved! May's flower block is called Amaryllis Belladonna - it's common name being Naked Lady.

For Knitting: A Challenge to complete my 25 for 2025 list. Here is the challenge: Knitting/Crochet 25 for 2025 challenge

Progress Made!

Another couple of categories checked off this month.

#13 Mohair - Go Go Dynamo Shawl was completed. This is another of last years WIPs. Nice to have this finished at long last. It uses a mix of yarns including mohair, sometimes held with another yarn and sometime not.

#22 Knit for Kid - a little embroidered cardie for my granddaughter Ruby's first birthday in June.... just need to add the buttons.

For Spinning: 5 grams of roving each day all year

Achieved but I needed to play a little bit of catch up as I was away without my spinner for 2 days at the beginning of May! On my initial instructions, I mention 5 grams or equivalent as I knew it wouldn't be possible to spin every day of the year, so to make up the difference I spin 10 grams in a day to cover any day missed. As long as I spin 150-155g per month that will be equivalent to 5g per day.

I started with this teal/grey roving....

.... and once that was finished, I began this beautiful roving I received in my May mystery roving package!

May's mystery roving is on the wheel for the second spin in May - almost halfway completed

And plying counts toward my 5g per day count too. At least 2 days I plied yarn and that often takes longer than spinning 5g especially when chain plying which is how I plied the teal wool below....

May's roving chain-plied ready to skein, wash, and measure, then knit into socks
This wool I spun last month. I'm plying three strands to make a 3 ply which will be a fingering-weight to sport-weight yarn.

Now I'm thinking up ways to use all my hand-spun yarns. The teal will be socks because it has nylon in it and the pinky-grey is yet to be determined!

For Crochet: A temperature blanket

Progress Made!

May's block is complete. The temperatures are getting cooler. Down south they are really cool - check out the last 2 days of May when I arrived in Canterbury!

Toy Making: A gnome challenge by Sarah Schira (one every month).

5th Achieved!  This little gnome is called Gnorwen from the pattern: All Work, Gnome Play.

I now have six gnomes sitting on the window sill with a few other bits and pieces. It's a delight to see my granddaughters discovering the new additions.

Embroidery: Make a small Redwork ornament each month.

Achieved!

Another completed Redwork ornament to add to my collection. Soon I'll be able to cut off the top row (the embroideries are all printed on one piece of fabric) and start making them.... or I may wait until they are all finished to begin that process.

Another busy month with travel involved is looming ahead of me. I'm currently down south for my granddaughter's 1st birthday and feel I'll be playing catch up once again when I arrive home later in the month. How are you progressing with your crafts?
