Last week I talked about creating my Anemone flower. As I was adding the final stitching, I was thinking how easy it would be to blanket stitch applique this flower. You could also make each petal a slightly different color if you wanted.
I decided to give the blanket stitch a try. I made one flower with a leaf just see how it looked. I am very pleased with the result.
I like to reduce the size of the blanket stitch for my applique. It depends on what I am stitching but generally the default setting is too large as I am usually working on small detailed applique. Large blanket stitch would be fine for larger pieces.
Some time back, I did another blog post describing how to blanket stitch. It actually compares blanket stitch with free-motion soft-edge applique so check it out if you need more information: Blanket Stitch know how >>
Here's one of my best tips and a short demo for Blanket Stitching by machine. TIP: If you have one, use the knee lift on your machine. It is much easier to pivot around sharp corners and means you do not need to remove your hands from your work..... Watch me as I pivot around sharp corners:
Maybe you want to stitch your Anemone using blanket stitch too and if you don't care for doing the free-motion zigzag around the center you can use blanket stitch there too.
You might also add a few seed beads to give that irregular appearance. Let me know how it goes or send me a photo, I'd love to see!
BTW this anemone design could easily be hand stitched too!
If you are keen to try Blanket Stitch or Needle Turn applique on this block, here is the Anemone pattern..... and you can find all my BOW flower applique blocks here.
