"Crystal Quilts - Foundation Paper Piecing the Easy Way" shows how anyone can make precise, complicated-looking quilts by using an accurate, foolproof method of foundation piecing.
Since all the patterns in this book are symmetrical, you make one block and copy it in multiples of 2 or 4. And because each quilt has interesting angles and complex-looking shapes, they may look hard to sew, but they are not that difficult.
While most foundation-piecing books address beginners and stick to simple patterns, this one kicks it up a notch by providing complex-looking patterns and innovative instructions to help you build your skills. Even though this book may address experienced quilters, the novice quilter is not left behind. If you’re a beginner, you’ll be able to follow along easily. And if you’re an experienced foundation piecer, this technique can stream-line the whole procedure.
There are easy-to-follow instructions that walk you through exactly what to do with each of your fabrics: how many strips to cut, how to subcut them, how to label them, and organize them until you’re ready to sew.
There are also maps for each block and quilt, labelled with patch names. Each patch is oriented on its map exactly the way you’ll see it when you’re working with the foundation, so you don’t have to imagine everything in reverse. It’s easy to see exactly how things should look and what you’re supposed to do at every stage of the piecing process.
Another unique element to this way of paper-piecing is how the foundations are labelled.
Basting in the seam allowance is marked with a dotted line for every first patch so that you
don’t go into another patch's territory.
There are Perfect Point Guides to help when attaching the patches to the foundations so you can avoid missing the tips of the points. They will end up exactly where they are supposed to be! There are instructions in the seam allowances that tell you how to join it to other foundations so there is no mix-up during assembly.
And there are instructions on which way to iron the seam allowances to help reduce bulk.
Even though the instructions are in order of production, there are charts and lists of things that were covered as you went through the construction phase. These added charts and lists pull out the tips and elaborate on them so if you have hit a snag or boo-boo, they can provide a quick reference rather than going back through all the instructions.
The patterns are at the end of this book so they are easy to find.
