Free snowflake template to download and use for quilting and/or applique

Add a little Applique or Quilting

Tags: applique, border quilting, Christmas, free design, how-to, quilting

I'm still working with Joy banner from last week when I cross-hatched the background with a metallic thread (check it out here if you missed it). Today I changed the border and added a plainer one with the idea of doing some decorative quilting over it. Somehow I got carried away and added applique instead.

These snowflakes are easy and can be either appliqued or quilted. In fact I'll share my template with you. You can add snowflakes to only the border or include them in the background as well.

To applique them: draw as many snowflakes onto fusible web as you want. You don't need to reverse these. Press the fusible onto the wrong side of your snowflake fabric and cut out. Then remove the paper from the back and press them onto your border. You can free-motion them on through all layers thus quilting them at the same time.

To add quilted snowflakes: draw 2 or 3 onto freezer paper and cut them out. Press the freezer paper, shiny side down onto your quilt and stitch around it. After you have finished stitching around you can lift the freezer paper up and press it in another spot. The stick will last a good while. I like working with several shapes to get an idea of positioning but you can work with just one if you like placing them at random as you go.

You could use this for other Christmas projects too. Leave me a note below to let me know where you plan to use this snowflake design, I'd love to hear about it!

Happy Quilting!
