Some time ago I was making a list of simple gift ideas, decorations and other creations that would be great ideas to make as gifts. You can find that blog post here: My Christmas Check List
This week I decided to mention how simple stained glass quilts make really quick and easy gifts to give too.
I've made a number of stained glass quilts and love this technique - the reason I have written a couple of workshops to explain how it is done, one for beginners and one for advanced quilters. The beginner's course includes two patterns - the poinsettia above and the sunflower below and both are quick to make. (both designs can also be purchased as patterns too! details below)
Stained Glass Sunflower
The art of stained glass applique is very similar to stained glass work using actual glass where, in a nutshell, you cut colored glass and cover the joins with leading. In applique, you cut colored fabric to represent the glass and use black bias binding (as leading) to cover the joins.
I thought today I'd get you started by sharing one of the videos from the beginner's workshop where I talk about the requirements. Note how I mention you can use pre-made bias binding or make your own. We talk about both in class but it pays to know that using fusible pre-made bias binding will have you finished before you know it.... and definitely makes either pattern a weekend project.
