This week I will share some tips for choosing inspiring topics to photograph for your quilts... then I will share my photos and this week's sketch. Feel free to join me and share yours too!
Tips for Choosing Inspiring Subjects
- Look for Textures: Texture adds depth and interest to quilts. Photograph rough tree bark, rippling water, or the soft folds of fabric. Later, think about how quilting stitches or fabric choices can replicate these textures.
- Spot Patterns: Repeating patterns are everywhere—brick walls, tiled floors, and flower petals, to name a few. These can inspire pieced block designs or quilt layouts.
- Play with Colors: Pay attention to natural color palettes. The warm tones of a fall leaf pile or the cool blues of a winter sky can guide your fabric selections. Experiment with contrasts and gradients to mimic the feel of your photo.
- Embrace the Unexpected: Sometimes, the most inspiring photos come from surprising places. A shadow on a sidewalk or the arrangement of objects on a shelf might hold the perfect spark for your next quilt.
My week 2 photos
Day 1: A Christmas card with a pretty border design
Day 2: Single leaf I saw on the footpath while out on my walk
Day 3: Moss on a tree trunk. That bark is pretty interesting. I wonder if I could create that as a texture
Day 4: Another day I walked my regular route in the opposite direction - what a great idea for a perspective quilt
Day 5: Not because I'm likely to make a quilt of a praying mantis, but I'd never seen a white one before so this photo found its way on day 5
Day 6: This jigsaw makes an interesting concept for a design whether one might be laying down looking up or incorporating a fancy border design
Day 7: Stormy skies, after yesterday's inspiration, I looked skyward!
