    FAQ About Patterns

Question: Where do I find the download I purchased?
As soon as you make a purchase, you are directed to a Thank You page which will have a link to download your pattern.
We also email you the 'Thank You' to your email inbox which includes the link to download your pattern. Please check your spam/junk box if you do not receive this.
Question: I've clicked the download link and nothing happens, what should I do?
Chances are the pattern is downloading in the background. Give it a moment then check your file app (iphone) or download folder (in My Files or File Manager on android) to see if the file is there. If it isn't, before trying again, try the suggestions in the trouble downloading question below.
Question: I'm having trouble downloading the pattern, is there anything I should do?
Yes, the most important thing to do is turn off any popup blocker. Popup blockers prevent the download window from being seen by you, yet we will not know about it so each time you try, it will appear to us that you have attempted to download the pattern.
Here is a full list of things to try:
    • Ensure that no pop up blockers are enabled
    • Ensure you are using a stable connection - wifi is better than phone data
    • Clear your cache and cookies
    • Try a different web browser, as well as private windows to rule out any browser issues
    • Ensure the web browser is up to date and that the latest device software is up to date
    • Try another device, like another computer, tablet, or mobile phone
Question: What if I exceed my download tries?
Don't fear, we will always make sure you receive your purchased pattern. If your download link expires, simply email us and we will send you a new link.

This historic approach to applique is for both hand and machine applique. The Broderie Perse technique allows you to create elaborate applique designs without going through the tedious steps of forming each motif yourself. You choose a fabric that includes the designs you like and applique the entire motif in one piece. Cutting out different areas allows you to be the designer of your own wall quilt.

Susan Dorchester includes instructions for hand applique with a blanket stitch and for machine applique with satin, zigzag, invisible, blanket and straight stitches as you construct a simple wall quilt using the Broderie Perse method. This ebook will not include instructions for needleturn applique however this may be used as well.  Hanging instructions and label ideas are included.

Skill level: advanced beginner to intermediate.

Broderie perse was traditionally made with chintz fabric, which is printed on heavier cotton than quilting cottons and has a glazed finish.  It is expensive and must be dry cleaned.  Therefore, we suggest that you try your first project with good quality quilting cotton that has the right kind of print.

There is a complete discussion of fabric and all the considerations for what is needed in Part One.

    Other suitable fabric ideas

    Fabric

    • 1 yard printed fabric (estimate) The actual amount of fabric needed will depend on the size of the motifs (design elements such as flowers) and the number of times the motif is repeated on the chintz fabric. Individual flowers and leaves should be about 1"-2" in size and have a variety of colors.; Asian theme quilting cotton would also be a good choice.
    • 5/8 yard for background of center block and border. This will be the same fabric and must be a color that matches the background of your printed fabric.
    • 3/4 yard binding and accent trim fabric. Find a solid that picks up one of the colors in your print and use the same fabric for the trim and accent.
    • 1 yard backing fabric - any color, solid or print, as long as it will not show through the front. This is a wall hanging, so you may want to purchase enough for a sleeve.

Cotton batting 1 yard - use a weight appropriate for a wall hanging. If you plan to hand quilt, consider that when making your choice.

    Thread

    • cotton thread to match background fabric
    • Optional: For invisible machine stitching: Mono Poly By Superior Threads or your favorite polyester monofilament thread
    • bobbin thread for machine stitching: Bottom Line by Superior Threads or your favorite bobbin thread

    General Supplies

    • small sharp pointed scissors
    • cutting mat and rotary cutter
    • pins
      • short appliqué pins
      • long thin quilting pins
      • basting pins (optional)
    • 12" square ruler (optional)
    • 24" rotary ruler
    • 1 sheet tissue paper at least 18" square
    • iron and ironing board
    • seam sealant liquid like Fray Check, OR a fusible like Misty Fuse, Wonder Under or Steam-A-Seam2, OR a fabric glue like Roxanne’s Glue-Baste-It
    • 1 yard permanent fusible stabilizer, such as Pellon Easy Knit Fusible Tricot (EK130) or Pellon Heavy Weight Interfacing (931TD)
    • Teflon pressing sheet or parchment paper for use with fusibles

    Other Supplies

    • For hand appliqué - size 10 or 11 sharp or straw needle
    • For machine sewing
      • size 70 needle for appliqué
      • size 80 needle for quilting
      • open toe embroidery foot
      • Optional: walking foot

Keeping the size of the quilt in mind, the amount of fabric needed will vary depending on how large the flowers and leaves are and how many are being used.  It may help to make a paper template that is 18" square and take it with you when you go shopping for fabric.  The template will help with the size of the motifs that will work best for this quilt.
