Inspired by Others: Finding Ideas Without Copying

Sometimes inspiration seems to appear out of nowhere - a flower catches your eye, a beautiful color combination gets you thinking, or perhaps you see a quilt that makes you want to get straight to your sewing machine..... But one of the wonderful things about quilt design is that we can be inspired by the work and ideas of others without copying them.

In fact, some of my favorite quilt designs have started with an idea that came from someone else. The important thing is to take that initial inspiration and let it lead you somewhere of your own.

Designing a Quilt for Someone Special

One of the most common ways we are inspired by others is when we make a quilt to give away. When you’re making a quilt for someone else, you naturally start thinking about what they like.

Perhaps you’re making a wedding quilt for a newlywed couple. Their favorite colors might give you your starting point, or perhaps you choose colors based on the wedding flowers or bridal party.

A quilt for a new baby might be inspired by the nursery colors. Traditionally, you might think of pinks for a baby girl or blues for a baby boy, but there are so many other possibilities too.

For a young child, inspiration could come from a favorite animal, a much-loved toy, a particular theme, or simply their favorite colors.

And adults aren't any different! Perhaps someone loves a particular flower, bird, animal, or even a landscape.

There are so many possibilities once you start thinking about the person who will receive the quilt.

A Quilt Inspired by a Name

This quilt is a lovely example from my own family. I made it for my baby granddaughter. My daughter asked me to make the quilt with a flower that began with A, because Amy was her daughter's name, and she also wanted the quilt made in pinks and purples.

That gave me two wonderful starting points: the letter A and the color palette.... from there, I chose the anemone flower.

The finished quilt wasn't copied from something I'd seen. Instead, I took the ideas my daughter had given me and used them as the beginning of my own design..... And I think that's an important distinction.

A Quilt Inspired by a Special Word

Another quilt began with a wonderfully imaginative word from one of my other granddaughters. When she was little, she called unicorns “hornicorns.” I loved that name so much that it became the inspiration for a quilt featuring a unicorn and butterfly.

The quilt wasn’t based on someone else’s design. Instead, I took her delightful way of seeing the world and turned it into my own quilt concept. Her special word provided the spark, while the design, colors, arrangement, and techniques developed from there.

This is another lovely reminder that inspiration can come from the smallest, most personal details. A child’s favorite animal, an unusual nickname, or even a word they have invented can lead to a quilt design that is completely unique.

Inspiration gives you somewhere to start. It doesn't tell you where you have to finish! Have you made a quilt inpired by someone special? Tell me about it in the comments below.
