Grandmother's Puzzle part 2

Let's continue with the second part of Grandmother's Puzzle. Last week, we made units one and two. If you missed these instructions, you can go back to last week's post - part 1

For the second part of this block, I will make the remaining sections and put them all together to make our Grandmother's Puzzle block. Let's get started....

Unit Three: Fold the last large triangle (main fabric) in half along the diagonal cut - you need to find the center of this side. Mark it accurately with a pin or fabric marker on the wrong side.

Position a small background triangle on top of the large triangle so the diagonal edges are even and the corner points are aligned evenly together. Turn the pair of triangles over and sew to the halfway mark on the large triangle. Do not sew beyond this point; this is very important.

Flip the triangles back to the other side and fold the point of the small triangle (the section that was not sewn) back over the seam ensuring the diagonal edges still align neatly. Finger press in place, pressing firmly.

Place the second small triangle on the other half of the diagonal edge, aligning the points as before.

Flip triangles over to sew with large triangle on top. This time, start at the center point being careful not to catch any stitching in the previous section and stitch along the diagonal seam. Turn over again and finger press the point of the small triangle back over the seam just sewn.

Important: Press the seam allowance toward the large triangle. The photo below shows how it should look from the right side. Arrows show the direction the seam allowance is pressed toward on the wrong side.

Putting It Together

It is now time to add the outer sections to Unit Three. You need ONE Unit One rectangle and ONE background rectangle.

Start by adding the background rectangle to one side of the large triangle, aligning the square ends. Notice how the point of the triangle extends beyond the rectangle.

Stitch it in place, then add the Unit One section, making sure the adjoining seams are pressed in opposite directions.

Add the remaining background rectangle and Unit One section to the Unit Two section with the center fabric square. (in my case, that is the unit with the teal square)

This is how they all look laid out (in position), ready to join.

how to join Grandmothers puzzle units using partial seams

Add the two small units (Unit Two) first. One to each side of the unit that will have the Y seam.

Next, with both sections positioned, flip the small unit over onto the larger unit matching one side so raw edges are even. Sew this first seam with the larger unit on top. Stop the seam directly on top of the halfway mark. This should be 1/4" from the end of the raw edge. It pays to do a couple of back stitches here to secure that seam point.

Now comes the tricky part. Twist the small unit around to align the two remaining raw edges. You may need a pin to hold it in place. Start stitching from that halfway mark (arrow in photo below) and complete the seam.

NOTE: The Photo shows the seam already stitched with an arrow indicating the starting point.

Press the seam allowance away from the center square. This is how the center looks on the back.

Congratulations, your Grandmother's Puzzle is complete.

Wasn't that fun? I'd love to see how your block looks. Will you make more? This block would make a lovely quilt!
