Four-Patch Units
The easiest way to make 4-patch units is by joining two strips cut at the same width together. (for example 2.5" strips)
Simply put the two strips right side together and sew a 1/4" seam along one long side. Press the seam toward the darkest strip then cut the strip into sections. The sections will be the same width as the strips you cut. (that is 2.5" if using the measurement above)

Now join these units in pairs with matching fabrics in opposite corners. The seam will butt up nicely so no pins are necessary.

I chained stitch these and press the seams to one side. Look how neat the back looks!
